ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Holland Street homeowner is active, creative—she’s a painter, loves to cook, and recently retired. So, it was the perfect time to finally give herself the kitchen she’s always wanted!
Warm, Cozy Vibes
We designed and installed custom birch cabinets and a built-in dining banquette that add just the right amount of texture and warmth. Paired with the lovely green accent walls and the classic Nelson Saucer bubble pendant, the space feels super cozy and inviting. It’s the perfect spot to cook, relax, sip wine with friends, and enjoy the view of her beautifully landscaped backyard.
Too Many Doors!
Before the remodel, the kitchen and dining area were crowded with doors and openings—way too many, and not enough functional space. That’s when designer Terah Beth jumped in and reimagined the whole layout. Here’s what changed:
Doors Moved:
The door to the basement stairs was moved from the kitchen to a nearby vestibule. Now, instead of awkwardly turning at the top of the stairs, it’s a straight, safer entrance.
The opening between the kitchen and living room vestibule was relocated so cabinets could run the full length of the wall—hello, storage!
The kitchen-hallway opening was also moved to make room for a larger kitchen and to give the upstairs bedroom door a place to open without blocking the way.
Doors Removed & Replaced:
We took out the kitchen’s back door to the yard—it wasn’t needed and was taking up prime real estate.
Then we swapped out the dining room’s old sliding door to the backyard for a new one that fits the fresh design.
Floor Fix!
Before the remodel, you could see three different types of flooring from the kitchen: linoleum, painted wood, and oak. So we brought in oak flooring to match the rest of the house and blended it in seamlessly. We refinished the existing floors too—and now you can’t even tell where the new floors start. It all looks like it was always meant to be this way.
The Big Picture
The final result? A light, airy kitchen that feels both relaxed and refined. There’s chef-level appliances, tons of custom storage, generous counter space—and it all comes together in a space that feels like a warm, welcoming hug.

CLIENTS REVIEW:
“I hired the design/build firm of The Jack + Mare for my kitchen remodel because I fell in love with Terah Beth’s design skills, seen, in one instance, on Houzz (the Sellwood house) and, the other, five years earlier on Zillow (when the Mt. Tabor house was listed for sale). I liked both kitchens so much that I decided to search her out when I was ready to remodel.
Terah Beth’s design is both a collaboration with the client and a process where she starts with a lot of ideas and gradually narrows it down as she figures out the best possible design solution for the space, optimizing both the practical and esthetic use of the space. There was an exciting moment when she ”nailed it” on my kitchen design and we both knew everything was perfect for my space and work could start.
Her great design skills are attached to the equally great building skills of her husband, Justin. I think I was extremely fortunate to have found the both of them.
Justin is a builder-extraordinaire. A hard working guy with the highest of standards. He really cares about doing good work and that you are happy with the results. I can also say that he is fun to be around. The few subs they use are well-vetted and communication is good. These are truly good people to work with.
My Kitchen is my dream kitchen, a modern, well-designed space with a warm, calming aesthetic. I admire it every day and so enjoy working and living in it. I am another very happy client of The Jack + Mare.”
